Currently Listening
Sleep Through The Static
By Jack Johnson
see related
I see you slowly swim away
As the light is leaving town
To a place that I can't be
But there's no apologies
Just go on
Just go on
There're still so many things
I want to say to you
But go on
Just go on
We're bound by blood that's moving

this past week...

just some random thoughts i had this week....

i found that i love something new this week.  this semester i started student teaching in harlem and its been an a crazy ride of highs and lows.  when i first started there i was overwhelmed with the challenge of educating some of the most unmotivated students ive ever encountered.  the first few weeks of teaching have been real tough cuz these kids totally test you, push your buttons, and try to break you (i even kicked a student in the shins - ask me about it later if you care to know).  but you stand firm, be fair, and you keep coming back the next day.
slowly starting this week, the students have begun to warm up to me and even start trusting me.  one of the math teachers had to go home out of the country this week due to a family emergency so they basically put me as the sub in there.  i thought oh great, now they're really gonna let me have it cuz the teacher's gone!  but to my pleasant surprise (most) have been cooperating and actually learning systems of equations with me.  my supervisor even came in for a visit yesterday and i told my students before hand what was going to happen and so they were all on their best behavior and would even chime in, "Ms. Kim is the best teacher!"  haha... i told them they didnt have to say stuff like that, but i appreciated the fact that they were on my side.  i guess if they hated me, they would have tried to get me in trouble.  oh so getting back to what i found that i loved.... i love witnessing this change happen, where a kid goes from resisting you to trusting you... it's really awesome.

so last night i was talking to one of my guy friends and i was kinda complaining to him how this other guy was getting on my nerves cuz he kept pushing my buttons and saying mean comments to me but then turn around and be really nice.  and my friend tells me that this is the classic way that guys flirt.    UHHH!  "why would a guy be mean to a girl that he liked?!"  i asked.  here's the reason behind it...
(mind you, this is from a guy's perspective)
Joe likes Jane
Joe is mean to Jane and puts her down from time to time.
Jane gets mad and says, "Hey why doesn't Joe like me?  Joe would never date me since he's so mean to me."
Joe keeps pushing the right buttons but also is nice just when she's about to get really angry.
Jane is confused and starts to think, "I like him!"
Joe is glad that his plans of lowering the girl's self esteem worked.  cuz heaven forbid if she has too much
confidence she will start to think that she is too good for Joe.  Making the girl realize that she might not
able to date Joe makes her want him more.
Joe wins.

(back to my thoughts)
how freakin ridiculous is this logic?!!!?????  its so wack!  and my friend tells me that this trick is in almost all dating books that have been published for males.  i still can't get over it.... but then that's how boys flirted back in kindergarten... i guess boys never grow up.  i dunno man!  what are YOUR thoughts on this?

***edit*** i love the way my friend jeff worded it, much better than my version...
You're supposed to use TARZAN and Jane, not Joe and Jane =b. I think that was on some TV show. It goes something like this (and remember this is from the TV, not your good friend jboy who isn't that shallow): Tarzan is mostly valued by his ability to keep Jane secure and safe. Jane is mostly valued for aesthetic & reproductive qualities. For Tarzan to get Jane, he must up his value, and take down Jane's self view of her value. Then Jane is happy that Tarzan likes her. So Tarzan's supposed to do things like point it out when she has food in her teeth.

Tarzan's a jerk isn't he.

my current favorite song for the moment:

"Angel" by Jack Johnson

I've got an angel
She doesn't wear any wings
She wears a heart that can melt my own
She wears a smile that can make me wanna sing
She gives me presents
With her presence alone
She gives me everything I could wish for
She gives me kisses on the lips just for coming home

She could make angels
I've seen it with my own eyes
You gotta be careful when you've got good love
Cause the angels will just keep on multiplying

But you're so busy changing the world
Just one smile can change all of mine
We share the same soul
Oh oh oh oh oh ohhh
We Share the same soul
Oh oh oh oh oh ohhh
We Share the same soul
Oh oh oh oh oh ohhh
